How to Hire an iOS Developer in Canada: The 2026 Guide

Rates, skills, interview questions, and where to find iOS developers in Canada — written by an iOS agency that gets hired for this weekly.

You need an iOS app built. You are based in Canada. You do not know whether to hire full-time, contract, or an agency. This guide is the conversation we have with founders on 4–5 calls a week.

Full-time vs contract vs agency — at a glance

Full-timeFreelancerAgency
All-in cost (1 app)CAD $120k+/yrCAD $40–$120/hrCAD $12k–$80k flat

Best whenyou have 2+ apps / ongoing roadmapbudget-sensitive, you can manage devsingle project, fixed scope, no dev management

What to look for on a resume in 2026

  • Swift 5+ and SwiftUI (UIKit-only in 2026 is a red flag for new work)
  • Apps on the App Store — public links, not just screenshots
  • Async/await, not old callback patterns
  • One real architecture: MVVM, TCA, or Redux-style. Red flag if they cannot name one.
  • Xcode Cloud or Fastlane experience (CI/CD)
  • At least one app with auth + networking — not just UI demos

5 interview questions we ask every candidate

  1. Walk me through your most recent App Store submission. What broke? How did you fix it?
  2. Explain @StateObject vs @ObservedObject vs @EnvironmentObject.
  3. How do you handle a background download that must survive the app being killed?
  4. Show me how you test a SwiftUI view that depends on a network call.
  5. What is your cost estimate for a 5-screen app with Firebase auth and push notifications?

If they cannot answer three of these clearly, keep looking.

Where to find Canadian iOS talent

  • Local meetups: CocoaHeads Toronto, Calgary iOS Meetup, Vancouver iOS Dev — best signal-to-noise of any channel
  • GitHub: search language:Swift location:Canada stars:>50
  • LinkedIn: filter Swift + Canada + open to work. Expect 100+ applicants per post.
  • Agencies: Black Layers (us), Rainfall, Raw Engineering, TopHatch
  • Upwork / Toptal: fastest, but quality varies wildly

Expected 2026 rates

  • Junior (1–2 yrs, has shipped 1 app): CAD $60–$85/hr or $80k–$100k salary
  • Mid (3–5 yrs, solid portfolio): CAD $90–$130/hr or $110k–$150k salary
  • Senior (6+ yrs, lead experience): CAD $140–$200/hr or $160k–$220k salary
  • Offshore (India, Vietnam, Eastern Europe): CAD $25–$55/hr — good for bulk work, risky for architecture decisions

Red flags we always screen for

  1. No public App Store links
  2. Cannot describe any app they shipped without generic bullets
  3. Quote is suspiciously low (< CAD $5k for a real app)
  4. No CI, no tests, no source control shown
  5. Says "yes" to every feature without asking about budget or timeline

When to skip hiring and use an agency

If you are building one app, do not plan to hire another developer for 12+ months, and do not want to manage daily dev work — agency is almost always cheaper and faster than full-time. At Black Layers we are a 4-person agency, all senior, based in Canada. We ship fixed-price, fixed-timeline iOS apps.
