App Store Optimization (ASO) in 2026: The Only Checklist You Need
ASO is free marketing. 70% of app installs start with an App Store search — here is how to rank when yours is the app people find.
If you spend $50,000 building an app and then upload it to the App Store with a generic name, a 3-sentence description, and a screenshot of your login screen, you will get roughly 30 downloads. Total.
App Store Optimization (ASO) is the single highest-ROI activity in mobile — and 80% of founders skip it. Here is the complete 2026 checklist.
The 5-field ranking formula
Apple ranks apps on five weighted inputs:
- App name (highest weight — up to 30 chars)
- Subtitle (30 chars, second-highest weight)
- Keyword field (100 chars, hidden from users, keyword-only)
- Ratings & reviews (volume + recency)
- Install & retention velocity (how fast people download and keep using it)
Name + subtitle — the 60 most important characters
Your app name must contain your primary keyword, not just your brand. Look at Calm ("Calm — Meditation & Sleep") or Notion ("Notion - notes, docs, tasks"). They sacrificed elegance for discoverability, and they were right.
Subtitle should contain your second and third keywords. Never duplicate words between name, subtitle, and keyword field — Apple deduplicates.
The keyword field hack most people miss
- No spaces after commas — you waste characters
- No plurals — Apple matches plurals automatically
- No brand names of competitors — it is against ToS and will get you flagged
- Use long-tail keywords — "ios budget tracker" beats "finance" every time
Screenshots: the 3-second test
Users swipe past your first screenshot in under 2 seconds. Your first 3 screenshots together must answer: "What does this app do, and why do I want it?" Use bold text overlays on top of real UI. No pure-UI screenshots.
Reviews — the multiplier
Apps with 4.5+ stars convert 2.2x more browsers into installs than apps with 4.0 stars. Prompt for reviews in-app, but only after a positive moment (e.g. user just completed a workout, hit a streak, finished a purchase). Never prompt on app launch.
Localization — the cheat code
Adding just 5 localizations (Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Japanese) typically increases worldwide downloads by 30–80% because each new locale opens up a parallel ranking lane. Cost with modern LLM translation: under CAD $200 one-time.
